Ever since I first started getting into modern calligraphy, I thought it would be really cool to put up a simple minimalist calendar on my wall. Something easily printable, clipboard and doodle friendly, where each month gets its own page.
I've looked around to see if I could find one and print it out, and while there were tons of similar looking calendars out there, none of them were free to download. Paying for a printout when I could quite easily make one seemed a little lazy and frankly nonsensical. Plus, I love me a freebie!!! Even if it means having to create it myself.
So, I've been toying with this idea for a while, but never got round to creator mode. Until now! I've decided that 2017 is going to be my year. The year of doing. So here comes my very own FREE version of a 2017 calligraphy calendar.
I'm a digital gal all the way, so having to draw the letters perfectly, scan them in and adjust the imperfections in Photoshop was a process way too painful for me to ever stick with. In fact, that was exactly why the 2016 calendar stopped at 'Feb'. In my house, it was February 2016 until this November.
I've tried drawing directly into Photoshop, but the strokes just weren't fluid enough (read: my hand would have a little freak out and mess up right at the end of every single word). So, I had decided to put project 'Calendar' on pause until someone somewhere would invent an app / plug in / tool that would solve all of my problems for me. I know, SEL-FLESS.
Lo and behold, that's exactly what happened! I discovered Adobe Photoshop Sketch - an awesome drawing application from (yes, you guessed it) Adobe for (yes, you guesses it) FREE. Sketch allows you to draw directly on your iPad using your finger or a stylus, aiming to replicate the look and feel of drawing on real paper with real tools. I won't get into detail now, but for me, freehand (or shall I say freefinger) calligraphy has definitely taken an interesting turn. Using the inbuilt brush presets, I was able to experiment with and easily draw out all of the calendar months on my 30 minute bus journey from work.
Check out the super simple interface below, and definitely give it a go if you are interested in creating some digital freehand typography, sending it to Photoshop as a layered PSD, or e-mailing it to yourself as an image, and never having to come close to an acrylic brush in your life.
